Sixty-three year-old James Piner climbed aboard a boat for the first time in his life on Thursday morning. The motorboat cruised the perimeter of Veasey Cove in Earleville, and employees of the Laurelwood Care Center assisted Piner, a double amputee, on deck.
In an attempt to help the community that we live and work in John McCracken the Physical Therapist and myself took a road trip to the Elkton Senior Center to teach the seniors some safety tips on Fall Prevention, and proper use of assistive walking devices. We received a very warm welcome from the seniors and were able to help several of them with some minor adjustments to their current walking devices. Sometimes just adjusting the height will make a huge difference in the posture that a person will have and help them to self correct back pain. We would like to thank the seniors for allowing us to make the adjustments to their devices and the warm welcome they always give us when we go visit with them.
Our Ombudsman graciously came in to play Elder Abuse Bingo with our residents here at Laurelwood to ensure that they understand what abuse is and to keep them safe and free from elder abuse. Thank you Diane Croom for taking the time to spend with us.
Thanks to Nikki Hurd, our full time Speech and Language Pathologist, we were able to go and speak with the seniors at the Elkton Senior and share information on swallowing precautions and Dysphagia.
